Wrap All The Things! @ Hustle Fitness in Eagle, Idaho

RM wraps was hired in December 2022 to work on many of the graphics needed for the new Hustle Fitness gym space in Eagle, Idaho. When all was said and done we ended up wrapping 3 walls (totaling over 500 square feet of material), the dumbbell weight racks, entry podium, main desk, AND all their windows.

A lot changed from start to finish on this project, but in the end we were able to get almost everything wrapped in the gym space (including 2 of the walls, twice!) before they soft-opened on February 17th, 2023. The outside graphics came a little later, as we slowly climbed out of the cold winter weather in Idaho.

Double Wall Wraps, Twice

The first (and biggest) items on the agenda were the 24’ and 58’ wall sections on flanking sides of the gym that the owners wanted to cover in inspirational quotes.

The bathroom-side wall was the first done. On the day of install we were the only ones there, so Randy texted a picture of the completed install to the owners. They decided the mostly-white design was just a bit too much and clashed with the all-black painted portions around it, so they opted to remove it and redesign it with a black background to blend in better with the surrounding area.

For the 58’ wall, the owners wanted something catchy and inspirational if you focused on it, but not super busy or hard on the eyes and that would blend into the rest of the gym space. They really liked the look of a particular Lululemon tote bag, so we took the concept and a big list of inspirational quotes (all modeled around their name, Hustle) and completely filled the wall edge to edge.

Custom Printed vinyl wall wrap

Version 1 of the 58’ wall.

Unfortunately, this version of the wall wouldn’t live long. A couple weeks after the install, the owners had part of their new workout equipment - chin-up bars - installed on the wall. The bars turned out to cause too much strain and damage to the underlying drywall as they were used, and needed reinforcement. There was no way around it - the wrap had to be removed, wall fixed, graphics redesigned, reprinted, and reinstalled. And all of this was only discovered about a week before their planned soft open. It was certainly a bit of a crunch, but luckily the material arrived on time, we had no issues during production, and we were able to get it re-installed the day before soft-open!

The Logo Wall

The original plan for this was a 7-foot painted black circle, with a raised acrylic logo mounted on top. Unfortunately the cost and lead-time on the acrylic piece made the project non-feasible, so the owners opted for a printed wrap instead.

Dumbbell Weight Rack Labels

The weights used in the fitness center vary from 5 to 120 pounds, and there were a LOT of them, so it was agreed that some kind of labeling was needed for gym members to know where to put them back once they were done using them.

On the standing weight racks, the only real space available was the area behind weights, but certain spots were obstructed by rivets. Because of those rivets, and wanting to protect the labels against scratching, it was decided to use full-size printed & laminated labels (printed on a conforming vinyl).

Entry Podium & Desk

The owners wanted their branding to continue across more surfaces in the gym, and the podium and custom-built desk at the entrance were perfect for more wraps. They wanted to continue their high-contrast black and white coloring and didn’t want anything too busy, so we opted for a black-on-black watermark look using the same “Quote Wall” artwork from the 58’ wall.

Outside Windows

To pull attention in from passers-by, the owners wanted to add action-oriented imagery and branding to the outside windows. They pulled inspiration from other gyms, but wanted the black-and-white-only branding to continue out onto the windows.

The layout of the window framing created a unique challenge - we wanted to use as much of the window space as possible to get the biggest/most visible graphics possible, but normal photography framing put the widow cross-bars right through the faces of the subjects. We went through 3 or 4 rounds of different pictures and changes with the client until we found the best balance without cutting through any faces.

How to install a Custom Printed vinyl window wrap

We used a combination of materials for these windows because lighting was a concern in some spots, and not in others. On the windows blocked out by drywall inside and lobby windows behind the main desk, we used the same solid 3M IJ40c wrap vinyl that was used on the walls and desk to keep the graphics as economical as possible for the customer, and to limit visibility where it was unwanted. On the big block of East-facing windows the customer wanted to keep as much light coming in from outside as possible, so we used a 50/50 partially-see-through vinyl with an optically-clear lamination. Even though about half of that block of windows was covered inside by drywall, we used the same material across the whole bay of windows to keep the appearance of the vinyl consistent left to right. All outside window graphics got a half-inch clearance trimmed away from the window rubber seal, and were sealed with 3M edge seal tape to protect against expansion/contraction caused by weather fluctuations.

The design process on these was started right around the Gym’s opening in February, and was finished up around the end of April. Graphics were installed around the first week of May, 2023.
