3M DI-NOC Abrasion-Resistant Vinyl vs. Regular Vinyl: Durability & Cleaning Test!
Testing Abrasion-Resistant Vinyl: A Hands-On Experiment
Vinyl wraps have become an essential tool for customization, protection, and aesthetic enhancement in various applications. In a recent video, Randy Miller from RM Wraps conducted a thorough test on abrasion-resistant (AR) vinyl to compare it with regular vinyl in terms of durability, cleaning, and resistance to wear. The results? Quite surprising! Let’s dive into the details of this insightful experiment.
The Purpose of the Test
The primary goal of the test was to evaluate how well abrasion-resistant (AR) vinyl holds up against daily wear and tear compared to its regular counterpart. To do this, Randy subjected both materials to scratches, markers, sandpaper, and cleaning solutions to determine their strengths and weaknesses.
Observations and Testing Process
1. Visual & Texture Differences
The abrasion-resistant (AR) version has a milky sheen due to an added protective coat.
The texture of the AR vinyl feels slightly different from the regular vinyl, providing a subtle tactile distinction.
2. Marker & Pen Test
Markers and pens were applied to both vinyls.
The AR vinyl made the ink appear duller, which might indicate some resistance.
However, both versions retained the ink similarly before cleaning.
3. Sandpaper Test (220 Grit)
Sandpaper was applied to both surfaces with even pressure.
Both materials withstood the abrasion well, though no significant difference was noted between the two.
4. Cleaning Performance
Invisible Glass Cleaner and rubbing alcohol were used to wipe off ink and other residues.
The regular vinyl cleaned more effectively, while the AR vinyl retained minor residue.
5. Goof Off Cleaner Test
Goof Off, a stronger cleaning agent, was used to remove persistent marks.
The regular vinyl cleaned up better than the AR version.
The AR vinyl retained slight marks, suggesting that the protective coating may have trapped some residue.
6. Scratch Test with Sharp Objects
A sharp tool was used to create scratches on both materials.
Both vinyls reacted similarly to deep scratches, showing no major advantage for the AR version.
Heat was applied to test if it would help the material recover—but it made no visible difference.
Final Verdict: Which Vinyl Performs Better?
Surprisingly, the regular vinyl outperformed the AR vinyl in some key areas:
Better cleaning results, especially when using Goof Off.
Less retention of marker and pen residue.
Similar scratch resistance compared to the AR vinyl.
If durability and easy maintenance are your priorities, the regular vinyl might be the better option. However, the AR version could still be beneficial in specific cases where a subtle protective coating is required.
Where to Get These Vinyl Wraps?

Final Thoughts
This experiment highlights the importance of real-world testing when selecting materials for projects. While the AR vinyl had its advantages, the regular vinyl’s ease of cleaning and comparable durability makes it a strong contender. What do you think? Would you choose abrasion-resistant vinyl or stick with the regular option?
